The Body Project

"The Body Project" is an intensive six to eight week body-centered curriculum designed to promote strong and healthy bodies and relationships among young women participating in our program. Themes discussed include sexual identity, sexual health, body image, violence against women, and motherhood. The project provides young women with opportunities to address the issues that profoundly shape their sense of being in the world. Reading, discussing, and writing about their bodies and sexuality in a safe, intimate setting invites participants to explore what it means to be fully embodied as a woman.

A focal point of the curriculum is inviting guest educators from local women's health organizations to facilitate open discussions about sexual health. Additionally, we provide access to health information and Chicago resources, and a copy of either Our Bodies, Ourselves by the Boston Women's Collective or S.E.X.: The All-You-Need-To-Know Progressive Sexuality Guide to Get You Through High School and College by Heather Corinna, along with guidance on using the reference books. Given the high rates of teen pregnancy and sexual activity in the population served, it is extremely critical to provide access to these reproductive health and education services as part of a broader discussion on sexual health, body image and self-esteem.

As a culmination, groups participate in an art project to represent themselves and what they experienced during the project. Examples of these art projects are pictured on the right.

"The Body Project" is simultaneously emotional, educational, and inspirational. It creates space for adolescent girls and teenage mothers to come together and relate around women's issues - the issues that matter to them.

My Body Speaks
by Michelle, age 14

Body,
speak to me
tell me what's
deep inside of me
Body,
remember my past
and show me my present
Body,
tell me what he really
means to me
Body,
hold my love, passion,
and creation!
